Air Conditioner Repair for Hagerstown Homes, Old and New

For AC repair in Hagerstown, MD, Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air sends licensed, dual-certified technicians 24/7, and there is never an overtime fee for an evening or weekend call. We repair central air conditioners, heat pumps and ductless mini splits. If the system is blowing warm air, freezing up, tripping a breaker, leaking water or making a new grinding or buzzing noise, call us before it gets worse. Most of those problems come from a single worn part, and catching it early keeps the compressor safe.

Hagerstown is the county seat of Washington County, and its housing mix is wide. Downtown and the older neighborhoods around City Park have brick rowhouses and early twentieth century homes, many of which were built without ductwork and later had air conditioning added in pieces. Newer subdivisions on the edges of town tend to have standard split systems. Summers in the Hagerstown Valley get hot and muggy, so an air conditioner that is limping along in June rarely survives August. Our Hagerstown heating and cooling team works on all of it.

OLDER HOMES

Cooling a House That Was Never Built for It

Older Hagerstown homes often have cooling that was retrofitted: ducts squeezed through closets, an air handler in a hot attic, or a mix of central air downstairs and window units upstairs. Those setups work, but they fail in predictable ways. Long duct runs leak, attic air handlers clog their condensate lines, and the top floor stays warm no matter what the thermostat says. When we repair a system like that, we also look at why it struggles. Sometimes the fix is a part. Sometimes sealing a duct or clearing a return makes the bigger difference. For rooms the ducts never reach, a ductless mini split can cool the space without opening walls.

Call Us If You Notice

Signs that an air conditioner needs a technician, not just a reset.

Ice on the copper lines

Frozen refrigerant lines usually mean low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the cooling off and let it thaw before we arrive.

Outdoor unit humming, fan still

This is often a failed capacitor or a motor that has seized. Running it like that stresses the compressor.

Breaker keeps tripping

An electrical fault in the condenser, a shorted motor or a failing compressor can all cause it. Leave the breaker off.

Upstairs much hotter than downstairs

Some difference is normal. A big gap points to duct problems, a weak blower or a system that is too small.

Water around the indoor unit

A blocked condensate line or a cracked drain pan is the usual cause. In an attic, that water ends up in a ceiling, so it is worth a fast call.

Fantastic service - bought a home with a very old hot water heater, and Brick Street’s quote came out to be substantially less than the other plumbers I spoke with. No compromise on service for the price, though - Mary was incredibly responsive and friendly when it came to scheduling a time to install the new water heater, and Tylerr did an outstanding job getting the water heater set up and running. Overall very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and professional!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Service – Highly Recommend Brick Street Plumbing Water Heaters I recently had my entire HVAC system replaced after my old unit had been in my home for over 20 years. I requested an estimate through Home Depot, and they referred me to Brick Street Plumbing. Water Heaters, From beginning to end, my experience was excellent! Brian came to my home, carefully explained the different options available, and walked me through the entire installation process. He was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, and always available to answer my questions. Communication with Brian was outstanding throughout the entire project. One of the best parts of the installation was that they were able to relocate my water heater into an unused space in my basement. This made the entire HVAC area much more spacious, organized, and accessible. I am extremely happy with how everything turned out! I also want to recognize Austin, Gmo, and Dani for their excellent work. They were professional, hardworking, respectful of my home, and paid great attention to detail. Update 10/2/2026 The manager got in touch with us and promptly sent out a service technician that was able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot the issue with our thermostat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We got our AC replaced by Brick Street through Home Depot. After a week our AC wasn't working so we had to put in a service call. They came out and fixed it. Then our heating wasn't working and we put in a service call to have a tech come out to and troubleshoot but their HVAC department has been non responsive via email or voice mail. We are not able to get in contact with them at all. Will not be doing business with this company again. Very poor customer service.

ONE CALL

Plumbing and HVAC From the Same Crew

Many people in Hagerstown first find us while looking for a plumber. Our technicians hold plumbing and HVAC credentials, so the same company that fixes your air conditioner can clear a drain, repair a leaking pipe or replace a water heater. That matters in older basements where the furnace, air handler, water heater and main drain all share one small room. See our plumbing services for the full list. Older Hagerstown houses also tend to have a mix of pipe materials from different decades of repairs. If we spot corroded galvanized lines or a tired sump pump while we are there for the AC, we will point it out and let you decide what, if anything, to do about it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air in Hagerstown?
Warm air usually means the outdoor unit is not running or the system has lost refrigerant. Check that the thermostat is on cool and that the breaker has not tripped. If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor fan and compressor are silent, a capacitor or contactor has likely failed. If both run and the air is still warm, a leak or a compressor problem is more likely. Either way, a technician needs to test it.
Can you add air conditioning to an older Hagerstown home without ductwork?
Yes. Ductless mini splits are often the cleanest way to cool an older house with plaster walls and no ducts. Each indoor head connects to an outdoor unit through a small hole in the wall, and each room can be set to its own temperature. We look at the house, check the electrical panel, talk through your goals and explain which approach fits.
Do you offer HVAC service in Hagerstown, MD on weekends?
We do. Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air is available 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and we do not charge overtime fees. Our technicians handle air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, boilers and ductless systems, so one call covers both heating and cooling. We serve Hagerstown and the surrounding parts of Washington County as part of our wider service area across Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Is it safe to keep running my AC if it is making a loud noise?
It is better to turn it off. Grinding, screeching or loud buzzing usually means a motor bearing, fan blade or electrical part is failing, and continuing to run the system can damage the compressor, which is the most costly part to replace. Switch the thermostat to off, leave the breaker alone unless it has tripped, and call for service. Describing the noise on the phone helps the technician plan the visit.
Is Brick Street also a plumber in Hagerstown?
Yes. Our technicians are licensed for plumbing as well as HVAC. In Hagerstown we repair leaks, clear drains, replace water heaters, install sump pumps and work on sewer lines. Older homes in the city often have aging galvanized or cast iron pipes, and we can inspect those and explain your options. Having one company for both trades helps when a problem crosses over, such as a condensate line draining into a clogged floor drain.
