Getting Cold Air Back Into Your Herndon Home

For AC repair in Herndon, VA, call Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air at (240) 969-4911 at any hour, and the rate stays the same whether you call at noon or 11pm. Our certified HVAC technicians work on central air conditioners, heat pumps and ductless mini splits, and they explain what failed before any work starts. Most summer breakdowns come down to a short list of parts: a weak capacitor, a burned contactor, a clogged condensate line, a dirty coil or a refrigerant leak. Many of those get fixed on the first visit once the cause is confirmed.

Herndon sits in western Fairfax County, a short drive from Dulles, and its housing covers a wide spread: mid-century homes around the old town center, 1980s and 1990s subdivisions, and newer rows of townhomes. That variety shows up in the equipment. Some houses still run an original split system with the air handler in the basement, others rely on a heat pump for both seasons, and many townhomes hide the indoor unit in an attic or hall closet. Our HVAC and plumbing team in Herndon has worked on all of those setups, and because our techs are dual-certified, a plumbing problem can be handled on the same trip.

Symptoms Herndon Homeowners Describe to Us

Tell us what you are seeing and hearing. These clues point the diagnosis in the right direction before we open a panel.

Cool air, but not enough of it

Vents feel slightly cool while the house creeps upward through the afternoon. A dirty indoor coil or a slow refrigerant leak is the usual reason.

A silent outdoor condenser

The indoor fan runs but nothing happens outside. Capacitors and contactors fail often in summer heat and are quick parts to test and replace.

Drips from the attic or closet unit

Water stains on a ceiling or a wet closet floor mean the condensate drain is blocked or the pan has cracked. Shut the system off and call.

Frost on the refrigerant lines

Ice usually means low airflow or low refrigerant. Running the system frozen can damage the compressor, so switch to fan only and let it thaw.

Heat pump stuck in the wrong mode

A reversing valve or defrost control problem can leave a heat pump blowing warm air in July. We repair both air conditioners and heat pumps.

Burning or electrical smell

Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker. A failing motor or overheated wire needs a technician before the unit runs again.

ATTIC EQUIPMENT

Attic Air Handlers in Herndon Townhomes

A lot of Herndon townhomes and newer houses put the air handler in the attic, where summer temperatures climb well past anything the living space sees. That location makes a few problems more common. Condensate drain lines grow algae and clog, insulation on the refrigerant lines breaks down, and the safety float switch in the drain pan trips and shuts the system off to prevent a ceiling leak. When we work in an attic we check the primary and secondary drains, the pan, the float switch and the duct connections, since a loose joint up there sends cooled air into the hottest part of the house. Clearing a drain is often a short job, but finding it early saves drywall. Regular AC maintenance is the easiest way to catch these issues in spring rather than during the first heat wave. Feedback From Brick Street Customers

Fantastic service - bought a home with a very old hot water heater, and Brick Street’s quote came out to be substantially less than the other plumbers I spoke with. No compromise on service for the price, though - Mary was incredibly responsive and friendly when it came to scheduling a time to install the new water heater, and Tylerr did an outstanding job getting the water heater set up and running. Overall very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and professional!

Brian came to my home, carefully explained the different options available, and walked me through the entire installation process. One of the best parts of the installation was that they were able to relocate my water heater into an unused space in my basement. Update 10/2/2026 The manager got in touch with us and promptly sent out a service technician that was able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot the issue with our thermostat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We got our AC replaced by Brick Street through Home Depot. After a week our AC wasn't working so we had to put in a service call. They came out and fixed it. Then our heating wasn't working and we put in a service call to have a tech come out to and troubleshoot but their HVAC department has been non responsive via email or voice mail. We are not able to get in contact with them at all. Will not be doing business with this company again. Very poor customer service.

REPAIR OR REPLACE

Questions Worth Asking Before a Big Repair

Small repairs are an easy call. A capacitor, a contactor or a cleared drain line puts a healthy system back to work. Larger repairs deserve a pause. If the compressor has failed, if the system uses the older R-22 refrigerant, or if the same leak has been topped off more than once, ask how old the equipment is, what else is wearing, and how a new system would compare. We lay out both paths and let you decide. If replacement makes more sense, our AC installation team sizes the new system for the house rather than copying the old tonnage. We serve Herndon along with the rest of Fairfax and Loudoun counties, and you can find the full list of towns on our service area page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell if my Herndon AC problem is the thermostat or the system itself?
Set the thermostat to cool, drop it five degrees below room temperature and listen. If nothing clicks on, check the thermostat batteries, the display and the breaker for the indoor unit. If the thermostat calls for cooling and the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit stays quiet, the problem is in the system, often a capacitor or contactor. A blank thermostat screen with fresh batteries can point to a blown low-voltage fuse, which a technician should trace.
Is it normal for my AC to run nonstop on hot Herndon afternoons?
On the hottest, most humid days a correctly sized system may run for long stretches, and that alone is not a fault. What is not normal is a house that keeps warming while the system runs, or a unit that never shuts off once evening cools down. Those patterns suggest a dirty coil, a clogged filter, leaky ducts or low refrigerant. Check the filter first, then call for a diagnosis if the temperature still climbs.
Why is my air conditioner making a hissing sound?
A steady hiss near the indoor coil or the outdoor unit often means refrigerant escaping through a leak. A short hiss right after the system shuts off can be normal pressure equalizing, but one that continues while the system runs is not. Low refrigerant reduces cooling and can freeze the coil. The fix is to find and repair the leak before recharging, since adding refrigerant to a leaking system only buys a little time.
Can I get an air conditioner fixed in Herndon in the middle of the night?
Yes. Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air takes calls 24/7, and an 11pm repair is billed at the same rate as one at noon, with no overtime fees. That matters during a heat wave, when a house can get uncomfortable quickly for young children, older relatives or pets. Call (240) 969-4911 and describe what the system is doing so the technician arrives prepared for the likely parts.
What should I check before calling for AC repair in Herndon?
Start with three things: the air filter, the breakers and the thermostat settings. A filter packed with dust can choke airflow enough to freeze the coil. A tripped breaker for the outdoor unit or air handler will stop the system cold, but if it trips again after one reset, leave it off. Also confirm the thermostat is set to cool, not fan or heat. If all three look fine, it is time to call.
Should I keep running my AC if the outdoor fan stopped spinning?
No. Turn the system off at the thermostat. When the outdoor fan stops, the compressor can keep running without the airflow it needs to shed heat, and it can overheat and fail. That turns an inexpensive fan motor or capacitor repair into a much larger one. Leave the system off until a technician has looked at it, and use fans and closed blinds to keep the house comfortable in the meantime.
