The Small Box That Runs the Whole System

Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air handles thermostat installation in Leesburg, VA, from basic programmable models to Wi-Fi smart thermostats you control from your phone. Our licensed HVAC technicians check that the thermostat you want is compatible with your furnace, air conditioner, heat pump or boiler, wire it correctly, and set it up so the system runs the way it should. We also repair and replace thermostats that have stopped responding, read the wrong temperature, or keep the system running nonstop.

A thermostat seems like a simple swap, but many of the problems we see after a do-it-yourself install come from mismatched wiring: a heat pump thermostat set up as a furnace, a missing common wire that drains batteries, or a second stage of heat that never turns on. Heat pumps in particular need a thermostat that handles the reversing valve and backup heat correctly. We install thermostats across Loudoun County and Northern Virginia and in nearby Maryland and West Virginia communities.

CHOOSING ONE

Which Thermostat Fits Your Home

Start with how you live, then match it to the equipment.

Manual Thermostats

Simple and dependable. A good fit for people who are home most of the day and prefer to set the temperature themselves.

Programmable Thermostats

Set schedules that match your weekday and weekend routine, so the system eases off while you are at work or asleep.

Smart Thermostats

Learn your preferences, offer remote control from a phone, and can tie into other smart home devices. Look for Wi-Fi, energy-saving modes and an easy-to-read display.

Heat Pump Thermostats

Built to manage heating, cooling and backup heat on a heat pump without calling for expensive emergency heat more than necessary.

COMPATIBILITY

Check the Wires Before You Buy

Most thermostat trouble comes down to compatibility. Before recommending a model, we look at the equipment and the existing wiring. Smart thermostats usually need a common wire for steady power, and older homes often do not have one at the thermostat. Heat pumps need a reversing valve terminal and control of auxiliary heat. Two-stage furnaces, dual-fuel setups and boilers each have their own requirements. Appearance counts too. Many people want a thermostat that suits the wall it hangs on, and some models need a trim plate to cover the outline of the old one. Thermostats are also a common suspect when a system misbehaves. A heat pump that keeps leaning on backup heat, a furnace that short cycles, or an AC that will not shut off can all trace back to the thermostat or its settings, so we test it before blaming the equipment. We will tell you which options will work with your system before anything goes on the wall.

INSTALLATION

Placement, Setup and Testing

Where a thermostat sits matters as much as which one you buy. A unit mounted in direct sun, near a supply vent, beside the kitchen or on an exterior wall reads the wrong temperature and makes the whole house uncomfortable. If yours is in a bad spot, we can talk about moving it. During installation we connect and label the wiring, configure the thermostat for your exact equipment, set schedules or connect it to your Wi-Fi, and run the system through heating, cooling and fan modes to confirm it responds correctly. A thermostat check is also part of routine HVAC maintenance, and our other heating and cooling work is listed on the HVAC services page.

Fantastic service - bought a home with a very old hot water heater, and Brick Street’s quote came out to be substantially less than the other plumbers I spoke with. No compromise on service for the price, though - Mary was incredibly responsive and friendly when it came to scheduling a time to install the new water heater, and Tylerr did an outstanding job getting the water heater set up and running. Overall very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and professional!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Service – Highly Recommend Brick Street Plumbing Water Heaters I recently had my entire HVAC system replaced after my old unit had been in my home for over 20 years. I requested an estimate through Home Depot, and they referred me to Brick Street Plumbing. Water Heaters, From beginning to end, my experience was excellent! Brian came to my home, carefully explained the different options available, and walked me through the entire installation process. He was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, and always available to answer my questions. Communication with Brian was outstanding throughout the entire project. One of the best parts of the installation was that they were able to relocate my water heater into an unused space in my basement. This made the entire HVAC area much more spacious, organized, and accessible. I am extremely happy with how everything turned out! Update 10/2/2026 The manager got in touch with us and promptly sent out a service technician that was able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot the issue with our thermostat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We got our AC replaced by Brick Street through Home Depot. After a week our AC wasn't working so we had to put in a service call. They came out and fixed it. Then our heating wasn't working and we put in a service call to have a tech come out to and troubleshoot but their HVAC department has been non responsive via email or voice mail. We are not able to get in contact with them at all. Will not be doing business with this company again. Very poor customer service.

Frequently asked questions

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?
Most will, as long as the thermostat supports heat pumps and is configured correctly. It needs to control the reversing valve and the auxiliary or emergency heat stage, and it should be set up so backup heat only runs when the heat pump cannot keep up. Many installation problems come from a heat pump being set up as a conventional furnace. We confirm compatibility and configure it for your specific system.
What is a C-wire and do I need one for a smart thermostat?
The C-wire, or common wire, provides constant power to the thermostat from the HVAC system. Many smart thermostats need one to run Wi-Fi and the display reliably. Older homes often have only enough wires for basic heating and cooling. When there is no C-wire, options include using an unused wire in the cable, running a new cable, or installing an adapter. We check your wiring and choose the right fix.
Why is my thermostat blank or not turning on the system?
Start with the batteries if your model uses them, and check that the furnace switch and breaker are on. A blank screen can also come from a blown fuse on the furnace control board, a tripped float switch on the condensate drain, or a loose wire. If the screen works but the system does not respond, the thermostat or its wiring may have failed. A technician can test both quickly.
Where should a thermostat be placed in a house?
On an interior wall in a central, frequently used room, roughly at eye level, away from direct sunlight, supply vents, doorways, lamps and kitchen appliances. Those spots heat or cool the thermostat itself and make it misread the room. Hallways can work if they are not dead-end spaces with poor airflow. If your current thermostat is in a poor location, relocating it can fix uneven temperatures.
Can I install a programmable thermostat on a boiler system in Leesburg?
Yes, as long as the thermostat is compatible with your boiler controls. Many boiler systems use simple two-wire connections, which suits most programmable models, though some smart thermostats need extra wiring or an adapter for power. Zoned boiler systems may need a thermostat for each zone. We check the controls and wiring and recommend a model that fits.
