One Machine, Two Seasons of Work

Brick Street Plumbing Heat & Air provides heat pump services in Leesburg, VA, including repair, replacement and routine maintenance for all heat pump makes and models. If your heat pump is not heating or cooling the way it should, is making strange noises, or is running up your electric bill, call us 24/7. A licensed technician will diagnose the problem, explain what failed and why, and get the system back to doing its job in both summer and winter.

Heat pumps are common across Loudoun County and Northern Virginia because the climate here suits them: hot, humid summers and winters that are cold but rarely brutal for long. The tradeoff is that a heat pump never really gets a season off, so wear builds up faster than on an air conditioner that sits idle half the year. We handle standard air-source systems, ductless mini splits and geothermal heat pumps, and we serve towns in nearby Maryland and West Virginia as well.

NORMAL OR NOT

Heat Pump Behavior That Worries People for No Reason

A few things heat pumps do look alarming but are perfectly normal. In winter the outdoor unit periodically runs a defrost cycle, and you may see steam rising from it and hear a whoosh as the reversing valve shifts. The air from the vents also feels milder than furnace heat, because a heat pump delivers a steadier, lower-temperature warmth. What is not normal: a thick shell of ice that stays on the outdoor coil, a system that runs constantly on backup or emergency heat, cold air in heating mode, or a unit that will not switch between heating and cooling. Those call for heat pump repair. It also helps to note when the problem shows up, such as only on very cold mornings or only after a defrost cycle, because that detail points a technician toward the right part faster.

WHAT GOES WRONG

Problems We Fix Most Often

Efficient systems still have weak points.

Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant cuts output in both modes and strains the compressor. We find the leak and repair it before recharging.

Thermostat Faults

A thermostat that is miswired or not set up for a heat pump can lock out heat or lean on backup heat.

Compressor Trouble

Hard starts, tripped breakers and loud humming often trace back to the compressor or the parts that start it.

Poor Heating or Cooling

Rooms that never get comfortable usually come down to refrigerant, airflow, defrost controls or sizing.

Noises and Odors

Grinding, rattling, burning or musty smells all point to parts or conditions that need attention soon.

Rising Electric Bills

A heat pump that is losing efficiency runs longer and calls on backup heat more often, which shows up on the bill.

What Customers Say About Our Technicians

Fantastic service - bought a home with a very old hot water heater, and Brick Street’s quote came out to be substantially less than the other plumbers I spoke with. No compromise on service for the price, though - Mary was incredibly responsive and friendly when it came to scheduling a time to install the new water heater, and Tylerr did an outstanding job getting the water heater set up and running. Overall very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and professional!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Service – Highly Recommend Brick Street Plumbing Water Heaters I recently had my entire HVAC system replaced after my old unit had been in my home for over 20 years. I requested an estimate through Home Depot, and they referred me to Brick Street Plumbing. Water Heaters, From beginning to end, my experience was excellent! Brian came to my home, carefully explained the different options available, and walked me through the entire installation process. He was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, and always available to answer my questions. Communication with Brian was outstanding throughout the entire project. One of the best parts of the installation was that they were able to relocate my water heater into an unused space in my basement. This made the entire HVAC area much more spacious, organized, and accessible. I am extremely happy with how everything turned out! I also want to recognize Austin, Gmo, and Dani for their excellent work. They were professional, hardworking, respectful of my home, and paid great attention to detail. Update 10/2/2026 The manager got in touch with us and promptly sent out a service technician that was able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot the issue with our thermostat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We got our AC replaced by Brick Street through Home Depot. After a week our AC wasn't working so we had to put in a service call. They came out and fixed it. Then our heating wasn't working and we put in a service call to have a tech come out to and troubleshoot but their HVAC department has been non responsive via email or voice mail. We are not able to get in contact with them at all. Will not be doing business with this company again. Very poor customer service.

KEEPING IT RUNNING

Maintenance and Replacement

Because a heat pump works year-round, we recommend heat pump maintenance twice a year, once before cooling season and once before heating season. Between visits, change or clean the filter, keep leaves, snow and mulch clear of the outdoor unit, and pay attention to new sounds. A smart thermostat set up for heat pump control also helps by keeping backup heat from kicking in when it is not needed. When repairs stop making sense, heat pump installation gives you a correctly sized system matched to your ductwork. You can see every other heating and cooling service on our HVAC services page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?
Brief cool air during a defrost cycle is normal and should only last a few minutes. If the air stays cold, the likely causes are a reversing valve stuck in cooling mode, low refrigerant, a thermostat set up for the wrong system type, or a failed outdoor fan or compressor. Check that the thermostat is set to heat, then call for service if the problem continues.
Is it normal for my heat pump to have ice on it in winter?
A light coat of frost on the outdoor coil is normal in cold, damp weather, and the defrost cycle should clear it regularly. Heavy ice that covers the coil and stays there is not normal. It usually means the defrost controls, sensor or outdoor fan have a problem, or the system is low on refrigerant. Do not chip at the ice, since that can damage the fins and tubing.
Do heat pumps work well enough for winters in Loudoun County?
Yes, for most homes. Modern heat pumps handle typical Northern Virginia winters well, and many homes here pair the heat pump with backup electric strips or a gas furnace for the coldest nights. That dual-fuel approach lets the heat pump do most of the work while the furnace covers deep cold snaps. We can look at your house and recommend the setup that fits it.
What does emergency heat on a heat pump thermostat mean?
Emergency heat turns off the heat pump and runs only the backup heat source, usually electric resistance strips. It is meant for times when the outdoor unit has failed, not for everyday use, because resistance heat costs much more to run. If your thermostat keeps showing emergency or auxiliary heat during mild weather, the heat pump may not be pulling its weight and should be checked.
Should I replace my heat pump or switch to a furnace?
It depends on your home, your fuel options and what you value most. Homes with natural gas sometimes do well with a new heat pump paired with a gas furnace. All-electric homes usually replace heat pump for heat pump. Ductless mini splits and geothermal systems are options in certain situations. Our technicians will walk through the choices that fit your house and explain the tradeoffs before you decide.
